“I like going to school,” says Esther, who is enrolled at a CAM supported school in Haiti. “I especially like writing and I learn a lot at school.”

Nothing stops Esther from going to school, not even the fact that she has a 45-minute walk and hobbles on a dislocated knee. When she was a baby, Esther developed a bone disease that required surgery on her leg. Since the family didn’t have enough money for proper follow-ups, the bone became disconnected and twisted.

Our staff noticed her condition after she was enrolled in the Haiti-Sponsor-A-Child School Program. They are working with a hospital that is offering a free surgery to correct Esther’s knee.

Esther’s mother profusely thanked our staff for arranging a surgery for Esther. She also expressed her appreciation for giving Esther and her brothers the opportunity to attend a Christian school. She shared how Esther is eager to learn. “When the school gives Esther homework, she usually wants to do it before she eats,” Esther’s mom says. “It’s a good school. I don’t have to pay to send my children there, and the children receive food. I want them to grow up and earn a living.”

For Esther, school has brought hope of a brighter future. She has a better chance at life since she is learning to read and write. Perhaps she can fulfill her dream of being a merchant.

Having an opportunity to study at school is only a dream for countless Haitian children. Many fathers make charcoal or do other odd jobs. But with an income of less than $2 a day, it is nearly impossible to pay schooling expenses for their children.

Haiti-Sponsor-A-Child School Program stands in the gap for about 8,600 children, providing education for them and teaching them about God. Supporters’ funds also provide each child with a hot meal on school days. Numerous schools are on the waiting list to receive support through this program.

“And all thy children shall be taught of the LORD; and great shall be the peace of thy children.” Isaiah 54:13
