War is always tragic. The conflict in the Islamic Republic of Iran brought death and suffering across a wide swath of the Middle East since it began on February 28, 2026. The death toll from missiles and air strikes is high; thousands have died in Iran and hundreds in Lebanon, with deaths also reported in Israel, Iraq, Syria, and elsewhere. Thousands of residences have been damaged or destroyed in Iran and Israel. In Lebanon, fighting between Hezbollah, a militant group that aligns with Iran, and Israel has uprooted more than 1.2 million people from their homes.
A man injured in an explosion in Tehran when a nearby police station was attacked said, “Two flying bombs were exploding and something hit my head. A lot of people died there.” A woman, describing the missile strikes, said, “When I opened the balcony door, the blast was so powerful it threw me back.”
At the time of this writing, a fragile ceasefire followed by unsuccessful peace talks is bringing apprehensive tension to suffering communities as they anxiously wait for news that the war will end. Iranians, who already had one of the highest food cost inflation rates in the world, are now facing increased hardship. With many stores closed and chaos widespread, a church leader in Iran reports that “many people on the streets are hungry.” In Israel, more than 3,700 people have been taken to hospitals for injuries, many injured from falling while rushing to bomb shelters.
Despite the terrible conditions in Iran, some Christians are doing what they can to help others. During the early days of active fighting, a believer reported that their area had been heavily bombed and they heard terrifying explosions. When asked if they could go somewhere else where it was safer, he replied, “No. As Christians, we want to stay and help people, and if the situation allows, we also want to share the Gospel.” He continued, “These past few days I have seen things that showed me how incredibly impactful it is when people receive help. The difference it makes is truly amazing. For now, we are staying here. We want to start preparing small packages and give them to people. The economic situation of the people is really, really bad.” Another church leader in Iran said, “Don’t worry about me. The church is alive. I just came back from going to a village to share the Gospel. As hard as life is, we are continuing and God is glorified!”
The flow of cargo ships with oil going through the strategic Strait of Hormuz has been hindered, sharply pushing up the cost of fuel worldwide and increasing the cost of transporting goods. Amin Nasser, CEO of the oil company Aramco, said, “While we have faced disruptions in the past, this one by far is the biggest crisis the region’s oil and gas industry has faced.” This will possibly lead to higher inflation and more economic hardship for many people around the world, especially those in the poorer nations, where many people live on only several dollars a day.
As usual, it is the many innocent civilians—women, children, elderly, and handicapped—who suffer the most when there is military conflict. It is the desire of CAM and its partners to exemplify the Prince of Peace in the war-torn Middle East, where Jesus Himself was born many years ago!
Christian Aid Ministries has staff on the ground in the Middle East and works with a number of reliable long-term contacts throughout the region. For unto us a child is born, unto us a son is given: and the government shall be upon his shoulder: and his name shall be called Wonderful, Counsellor, The mighty God, The everlasting Father, The Prince of Peace. Isaiah 9:6
