Hurricane Sally made landfall in Alabama and Florida early Wednesday morning. The category 2 hurricane, with wind speeds reaching 100 mph, crawled slowly, dumping torrents of water. Officials urged people to take advantage of the storm’s slow pace and get out of harm’s way.
Meteorologists said that Hurricane Sally, now a tropical storm, could dump as much as 35 inches of rain in coastal communities. Local media showed images of homes being ripped apart by the howling winds.
