A sudden outbreak of war engulfed Nyan’s* village in Myanmar, forcing him and his family to flee. As they fled for their lives, some of their friends and neighbors were tragically killed along the way.

Arriving at a small village in Thailand, Nyan had no way to provide for his family. After a while, he was offered a job on a farm. Nyan readily accepted the work even though it was physically exhausting and paid little. Even with a job, Nyan was unable to provide enough food for his family. Some days, he and his wife endured hunger so their children could eat.

One day, Nyan heard that food parcels were being distributed in the village. He ran to get one of his own and found it filled with rice and dried foods. He took it home to his family, and together they prepared a delicious meal. Nyan said, “[My children] ate with such joy and contentment. . . . My wife was also happy; she told me that this box of food felt like a gift from heaven.”
