Ciliana pushed the dirt around the tiny chaya cutting. She had learned a lot about the chaya plant already—its nutritional benefits and the importance of cooking its leaves before they can be eaten. Many others in her Haitian community were also planting chaya, with the hope that someday these plants would help feed their families.

Ciliana joined SALT Agri-Plus several years ago when a friend invited her. “I entered [the program] because I want the country to change,” Ciliana said. Her hope for her country is that Haitians will live together in peace and harmony. “I want to stay in Agri-Plus teaching as long as I live.”

SALT Agri-Plus has taught Ciliana many valuable things about gardening, and she is happy to share her plants and what she has learned with her neighbors. She wants to continue sharing with and blessing those around her, just like the tiny chaya plant will someday.
