Ethiopia has a fast-growing church, but only about 20 percent of evangelical Christians there own a Bible. In many cases, entire churches do not have even a single Bible. Ethiopia is rated in the top four most needy places for Bibles among believers according to the Bible Access List.
So why the shortage? Several reasons come to the surface: A dominating religious group in Ethiopia has long restricted its members from interacting with the Bible on a personal level, and the population growth has exploded in recent years. These issues, combined with high import taxes and the lack of good printers, have created a huge shortage of Bibles.
However, amid this scarcity, the Word of God is being spread, and CAM has a wide-open door to provide Scriptures. The opportunity to distribute tens of thousands of Bibles throughout Ethiopia continues. Bibles are being actively used as a foundation for teaching, discipleship, and outreach—helping to grow faith in every corner. Let’s hear from pastors in Ethiopia:
“Your Bibles came at the right time to our church. I had no Bible for several months because I gave mine to a new believer who desperately wanted to own one. I tried to buy Bibles from different places but was unsuccessful. Receiving these Bibles has rekindled hope and strengthened our ministry.”
“Now about 50 percent of our believers have a Bible of their own, which has greatly contributed to successful Bible reading and discipleship. This growth encourages us to continue investing in Scripture distribution to nurture the spiritual maturity of our church.”
Who is receiving Bibles?
Believers who had no Bible of their own and had long expressed their deep desire for one.
Newly baptized believers joyfully received their very first copy to support their growing faith.
Children in Sunday school received New Testaments, helping them connect with God’s Word from a young age.
Many church leaders and other ministers, who hadn’t owned a Bible before, now have one to help them grow in Christ and guide their ministry.
Elderly believers were blessed with Bibles to strengthen their faith in their later years.
And perhaps most touching, new converts received Bibles right after committing their lives to following Christ, giving them a firm foundation as they begin their walk with Him.
