When floodwaters swept through western Manitoba in June, many families suddenly found themselves facing water-filled basements, damaged belongings, and an uncertain road ahead. Before recovery was well underway, another period of heavy rainfall around the Canada Day weekend brought renewed flooding to parts of the region, including Swan River and surrounding communities, adding fresh discouragement for many already struggling to recover.

Christian Aid Ministries Canada Rapid Response Services (RRS) established operations in Minitonas to assist homeowners with the difficult cleanup process. Since arriving, volunteers have completed more than 30 cleanup projects, removing flood-damaged materials, cleaning homes, and helping families begin putting their lives back together.

Although every home has its own story, a common theme has emerged. Many families have expressed how overwhelming it felt to face the cleanup alone. Having a group of cheerful volunteers arrive at their door – not asking for payment, but simply wanting to serve in Christ’s name – often brought encouragement long before the physical work was finished.

The local community has been very supportive of the project. Other organizations have also established operations in the area, allowing us to complement one another as we serve homeowners with practical assistance.

One challenge facing many residents is that much of the damage resulted from overland flooding, which often leaves homeowners with limited or no insurance coverage. While cleanup is nearing completion, it has become evident that some families will continue to face significant rebuilding needs long after the floodwaters have disappeared.

During a recent visit to Manitoba, CAM Canada staff met with local officials, homeowners, and the RRS leadership team to better understand these ongoing needs and to prayerfully evaluate the possibility of a future rebuilding project. While no decisions have been finalized, these conversations have highlighted the importance of continuing to walk alongside families as they recover.

Disasters often leave more than damaged buildings. They leave behind discouragement, uncertainty, and questions about the future. One of the greatest blessings of the RRS ministry is the opportunity to minister to people during these difficult moments. Through conversations on front steps, prayers with homeowners, and the simple act of serving without expecting anything in return, volunteers are able to share the love of Christ in tangible ways.

We are grateful for the many volunteers who gave of their time to serve, the churches that supported the effort through prayer, and the donors whose generosity makes this ministry possible.

Please continue to pray for the families affected by the Manitoba flooding. Pray that God would bring comfort to those facing difficult decisions, provide for the many rebuilding needs that remain, and use these acts of Christian service to point hearts toward the hope that is found in Jesus Christ.

“And let us not be weary in well doing: for in due season we shall reap, if we faint not.” — Galatians 6:9
