Sommama was just 16 years old when she was diagnosed with leprosy. But her family chose to hide her instead of treating her disease and caring for her. This rejection hurt Sommama deeply.

As her deformities became apparent, her family could not bring themselves to help her. They abandoned her at a leprosy colony. Sommama lived among other rejected lepers. She grappled with the sad reality that she would never again live with her family. She survived by begging, since she had no other way to make money.

As time went on, Sommama met Pichayya, also a leper in the colony, and married him. They were blessed with two children who don’t have leprosy.

Amid their loneliness and pain, Sommama and other lepers are feeling the love of Christ through the kindness of Christian workers who visit the leprosy colonies with food, blankets, and other care. Many lepers have come to know the Lord through the gentle care of Christian workers.
